What is the tenacity of polyester yarn?

2023-10-31

The tenacity of polyester yarn varies depending on the denier (linear density in grams of 9000 meters of yarn) and the type of yarn (textured or monofilament). However, generally speaking, polyester yarns have a high tenacity, which means they are strong and can withstand tension or stretching without breaking.

For example, a high-quality polyester fiber can have a tenacity of up to 8.5 grams per denier (gpd), which means a fiber with 1 denier weight can withstand up to 8.5 grams of force before breaking. Similarly, a high-tenacity polyester yarn can have a tenacity of up to 9.5 gpd, which is even higher than that of the fiber.

It's worth noting that polyester yarns can have different tenacity depending on whether they are textured or monofilament. Textured polyester yarns are typically used for making fabrics, and they have a lower tenacity of around 3–6 gpd. On the other hand, monofilament polyester yarns are used for making industrial products such as fishing lines, ropes, and geotextiles, and they have a higher tenacity of around 6-12 gpd.
